Personal Development

Our curriculum extends beyond national curriculum subjects and provides effectively for pupils’ broader development. Our provision for personal development is built around robust PSHE and citizenship education, development of pupils’ character, the provision of high-quality pastoral support, wider opportunities, preparation for life in modern Britain, a carefully considered RE curriculum, building respect for the different protected characteristics.

We have designed our PSHE education using the intended learning outlined in the PSHE Association’s programme of study. Pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. It helps children and young people to stay healthy and safe, while preparing them to make the most of life and work. We implement our intent using Jigsaw. This is a comprehensive programme for Primary PSHE including statutory Relationships and Health Education, in a spiral, progressive and fully planned scheme of work, giving children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others. With strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, Jigsaw 3-11 properly equips schools to deliver engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole-school approach. Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.

CRED

Centre for Race, Education & Decoloniality

What is CRED?

We have achieved the silver standard for this award, which takes a community approach to developing a culture of anti-racism in our school. It provides a framework to evidence policies and initiatives for both staff and pupils within the wider school community.

What does it mean to be anti-racist?

Anti-Racism is the practice of actively identifying and opposing racism. The goal of anti-racism is to actively change policies, behaviors, and beliefs that perpetuate racist ideas and actions.

How we demonstrate we are an anti-racist school?

Since our academy began its Anti-Racist School Award journey, several impactful initiatives have been introduced and sustained. These include:

  • establishment of Diversity Ambassadors
  • implementation of Anti-Racist Alliance resources to teach our pupil’s key theme
  • development of a culturally representative reading spine
