A message from Miss Linklater

Hi Giraffe Class,

I am sorry that we will not be returning to school for a while. I was so excited to see you all and to hear all about your holidays. I will be speaking with you all soon so we can catch up.

We are going to be learning in a different way for now. We will be using Microsoft Teams to see and talk to each other every day. This is where we will be having our lessons online , and there will be lots of lovely activities for you to complete and share with me.

Everyday please make sure you log into Seesaw. You need to complete the Phonics/ English, Maths, and Wider Curriculum sessions that have been allocated to you. There will also be an optional well-being and mindfulness task; this one does not need to be completed, but we must remember to look after our mental health at this uncertain time. The timetable of tasks and the tasks themselves will be released by 3pm on the day before so you can be ready for the activities. You can do tasks in any order but it is important that you complete all tasks. Please ask questions if you are at all unsure.

I am so proud of how resilient and brave you are. I know that you will put 100% effort into your learning whilst at home, and that you will continue to make excellent progress.

Remember how amazing you are, and keep smiling!

Miss Linklater

Hello to the grown ups of the Giraffe Class,

I hope you are all okay and are feeling reassured by the provision we have in place for the children during this lockdown.

If you need any help or support during this time, please email me at I will reply to all emails as soon as I see them.

I appreciate that this is a very uncertain and challenging time for us all, and particularly when caring for young children. Please do remember that we are all here to support you as well as your children.

Please also remember to take care of your own mental health, and do reach out if I can help in any way.

Take care,
Miss Linklater

Whistle Stop Opera: Cinderella – A Christmas gift from Opera North…

posted 13 Dec 2020, 02:55 by Louise Sutton

This song resource is being sent out in advance of us sending out our free Whistle Stop Opera: Cinderella performance film to schools by the beginning of next week, so children have time to learn the short song in preparation for watching and joining in with the performance!

This is being sent out as a Christmas gift from Opera North, as we realise it hasn’t been possible for schools to undertake Christmas trips out to the theatre during this festive season. We hope this will bring the magic of opera to pupils and teachers and will be the next best thing to bringing a live Christmas production.

Newsletter - Christmas!

posted 3 Dec 2020, 02:07 by Clare Linklater

Hello Year 1!

It is that time again when we write our termly newsletter. I really hope you have enjoyed your first term in Y1 and our topic 'Part of my World.' We have learnt a lot about our community, our history, and lots of healthy eating, science and DT to go along with it! We have been super busy! Both Lions and Giraffes have written a beautiful diary entry based on our core text, 'Grandad's Secret Giant.' Finally, with all the classroom decorated we are now ready to finish all your hard work and begin celebrating Christmas with you on the last week.

Here are a few reminders:

- Christmas Dinner on Wednesday 9th December
- Christmas Jumper Day on Friday 11th December

We are also looking forward to surprising you with a virtual Christmas Play! Watch this space!

Looking forward to the new term and the new year ahead! Our topic will be called 'The Greatest Show' and based around entertainment and the circus! We are still waiting on ever changing guidance as to whether we can do any trips or events but we can't wait to be able to! Our initial plan was to be able to take the children to a Pantomime - which obviously isn't going to happen. So if you find any virtual ones or old ones on YouTube please watch them with your child and join in all the fun. This will link in with our next topic brilliantly.

Our new PE day next term will be on a MONDAY. Please ensure your child comes to school in full PE kit and appropriate clothes for playing outside during the day.

All the Y1 Team are completely blown away with the kindness, resilience and progress shown by all children at this crazy time! We are very proud to be working with you.

All the best, and Merry Christmas from all our families to yours! x

A BIG Musical Well Done

What a great start you have had to your music lessons Y1. You have already learnt 4 of the main key terms we will use during most of our music lessons and learn more as you move through school. I am looking forward to next term when hopefully your teachers will send me some videos to show me your great learning, as I've heard lots of exciting things!

Have a lovely Christmas

Newsletter Post!

What a great term we have had so far! It has been an amazing start to Year 1! Since coming back in September, the children have worked really hard on our 'Road to Recovery Curriculum.' We looked at lots of practical activities for maths and fine motor skills to help get us back in to our learning behaviours. The children really enjoyed looking at a range of art and jigsaw activities which eased us back in to school and helped us to discuss our experiences from lock down in a positive light. On week 5 we began looking at our current topic, 'Part of my World.' Looking at the local area and the history of our lives have been a priority during this time to really kick start our learning. The Year 1 team are disappointed we have not been able to take the children out of school and help them to explore their community, however if you get the opportunity to do this please do so! Our learning has quickly moved on to looking at healthy eating where we will be making fruit salads! I can speak on behalf of the teachers and the children when I say, we are all really enjoying learning about this and it has been a perfect way to start a strange year! Our class text will soon be 'Grandad's Secret Giant,' which is a beautiful story that we can't wait to share with the children.

A few reminders - Our PE day is a Friday, where the children must come in PE kits appropriate for the weather.
Please can every parent ensure that they are accessing seesaw for each weeks home learning; any problems please see your child's class teacher.

Thank you for your on-going support.
The Year 1 Team :) xx

Home Learning Superstar Shout Outs!

posted 25 Sept 2020, 02:09 by Clare Linklater

Mrs Jenkinson & Miss Gay have asked us to show their appreciation and amazement with the home learning done during lockdown! They said they know from speaking to parents on telephone calls lots of children did lots of work and some sent in great things! Here are the children who really stood out for their outstanding efforts at home:

Alice - A superstar with all home learning!
Chloe - Especially for her hard work with phonics and all the new sounds she has learnt!
Kelsey - A great effort with everything set!
Sushant - For always challenging himself!
Mason - For all the hard work he did over lockdown!
George - For all the fantastic pictures of learning he sent in!

Well done guys! I look forward to setting you all homework and seeing what fantastic things you produce!

I am very proud xx

Memories - Weekend Activity

posted 25 Sept 2020, 01:42 by Clare Linklater   [ updated 25 Sept 2020, 02:05 ]

On Monday we will be starting our new topic 'Part of my World.' This week we have been looking at timelines e.g. what could you do when you were a baby, toddler and now. To give children a deeper understanding of History and what makes us unique we will be looking further in to our History. To do this we will be sharing memories and stories from our life so far. Therefore, we are asking you this weekend to please discuss this with your child. This might be something they remember or a story you want to share with them, a family holiday, a memory from lockdown, the birth of a sibling, a party anything that is a memory for them! Please discuss this well with your child and send any information or pictures to your class email. The children will be sharing this with the class and doing some writing about this on Monday so the more knowledge they have the better!

Thank you for your on-going support,
Miss Linklater & Miss Blakemore xx

Update for September

posted 14 Aug 2020, 02:32 by Clare Linklater

Hey guys :)

I have had a few emails from parents this week asking about back to school so I just wanted to take this opportunity to clarify a few things that might help.

Children can bring a bag to school but please try and make this a small bag. They need to bring a water bottle and snacks will be provided.

Please send your child in sensible shoes/trainers so that if we do any PE they can just partake as they are. Children at the moment will NOT be getting changed for PE or any other form of physical activity.

Any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

A little hello from Mrs Quinn!

posted 31 Jul 2020, 05:40 by Clare Linklater

Hello I am Mrs Quinn and you will be seeing me in some lessons in Y1! In my spare time I like keeping fit and running; I love watching football and I am a big Manchester United fan! I love spending time with my family, friends and my two dogs (2 Labradors called Harvey and Sasha.) I do like some things on TV but my favourite thing to do is sit in the garden and read a good book. My favourite subject is phonics!

I am looking forward to seeing you all in September!

Love from Mrs Quinn xxx
